Administrative files, 1910-1915.

The Governor is the chief executive of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. This series consists of the administrative files of Governor Emmet O'Neal. It contains applications, reports, recommendations, correspondence, clippings, greeting cards, invitations, leaflets, lists, pamphlets, and telegrams. The records consist of correspondence and other materials regarding the numerous state departments and agencies. In particular the newly formed Chancery Court, Convict Dept., Examiners of Public Accounts, Boys Industrial School, Tax Commission, National Guard, and the State Dept. of Education are well represented. Prominent subjects include the case of theft of public monies under the Convict Dept., the case of James H. Oakley, child labor, education, finance and tax reform, mines and mining, highways and the formation of the State Highway Commission. Applications, recommendations, and appointments to various local and state offices takes up a great deal of this series, and pardons and paroles are very prominent. A lynching in Clarke County is also discussed.
